WHAT

Removal of PFAS-contaminated soil and sludge from FTG area

The Challenge

The Fire Training Ground at Yulara – Uluru Region (Connellan Airport) had suffered contamination from firefighting chemicals, resulting in impacted soils and a compromised wastewater treatment system. The site contained PFAS-laden soil and sludge that risked being discharged into the local sewage system. Remediating the site required precise coordination, regulatory approvals, and safe handling of hazardous material—all while operating in a remote location with limited resources and infrastructure. Contaminated soil and wastewater infrastructure near the Fire Training Ground required remediation and cleaning to prevent PFAS discharge into the treatment system.

The SOLUTION

We secured all required permits and mobilised a skilled internal team alongside trusted local subcontractors. Our crew removed and safely disposed of 20 tonnes of PFAS-impacted soil in line with ASA’s testing guidelines. The excavated areas were stabilised using imported fill and verified as clean. In parallel, we cleaned the wastewater infrastructure—pits, drains, and lines—using vacuum truck services, extracting approximately 1 tonne of sludge and sediment to restore system performance and mitigate discharge risks.

The RESULT

The remediation was completed in just 16 days during December 2024, well under the allocated time and budget. The combination of an efficient internal crew and engagement with local suppliers ensured smooth project delivery. Our results exceeded expectations, enhancing environmental outcomes and operational readiness at the airport. The project strengthened our relationship with regional stakeholders and demonstrated Ternary Group’s capability to deliver high-quality solutions in remote and sensitive locations.
