Alice Springs Airport – PFAS Remediation

A large-scale soil remediation project managed with precision, compliance, and Indigenous workforce inclusion.

Where

Alice Springs Airport, NT

WHEN

April – May 2024

HOW LONG

60 Days

WHAT

Excavation and disposal of 780 tonnes of PFAS-contaminated soil

The Challenge

The fire training ground at Alice Springs Airport had been impacted by decades of simulated firefighting exercises, resulting in widespread PFAS contamination across the soil. This posed a significant environmental risk, requiring immediate remediation to protect local ecosystems and human health. The project involved multiple stakeholders, including government agencies and environmental consultants, demanding detailed planning, strict regulatory compliance, and seamless coordination to manage health and environmental safety, logistics, and site rehabilitation. Contaminated soil from simulated fire suppression activities at the fire training ground posed environmental and health risks. Stakeholder coordination and rigorous safety and logistics planning were critical to success.

The SOLUTION

We implemented a comprehensive remediation strategy beginning with dust mitigation controls and safety protocols for the team. Approximately 780 tonnes of PFAS-contaminated soil were excavated to a depth of 200mm. The soil was transported nearly 2,000 km for thermal destruction at an accredited facility. We lined the excavation with permeable geotextile fabric, then backfilled the area using certified, clean fill material. The surface was compacted and reconstructed to meet heavy vehicle standards, ensuring minimal disruption to airport operations and long-term stability.

The RESULT

The project concluded successfully in April–May 2024, on time and below budget. Our team maintained a 60% Indigenous workforce, demonstrating our ongoing commitment to workforce inclusion. Stakeholders at Alice Springs Airport commended the quality of our work, collaborative project management, and adherence to environmental obligations. Our performance led to immediate extensions for further remediation and civil works, solidifying Ternary Group’s reputation as a trusted provider of environmental solutions in complex operational settings.
