WHAT

Remediation and safe disposal of a PFAS-contaminated fire training unit

The Challenge

The large mock-up unit (LMU) at the RAAF Base Darwin Fire Training Ground had been used for years as a critical training asset for firefighting simulations. Over time, it became heavily contaminated with hazardous substances including PFAS, petrol, oil and other residues. The structure posed significant risks to both environmental and human health and its condition made conventional disposal or recycling unfeasible. The site required careful handling to ensure compliance with strict environmental standards while dismantling and disposing of the structure safely and efficiently.

The SOLUTION

Our team began with comprehensive pre-works analysis and testing to establish contamination levels and inform the remediation strategy. We utilised advanced laser cleaning technology to decontaminate the LMU’s surfaces, removing chemical residues to safe levels. The structure, measuring approximately 20 metres long, 6 metres wide and 3 metres tall and weighing around 30 tonnes, was carefully dismantled and segmented for safe disposal. All works were conducted under strict environmental and safety controls to ensure the wellbeing of both personnel and the site.

The RESULT

The project was completed in just two weeks in November 2023, finishing ahead of schedule and under budget. The total project value was $250,000. A 70% Indigenous workforce contributed to its success, reflecting our commitment to local employment and community engagement. Our collaborative approach and high standards earned praise from the client and stakeholders, with the outcome exceeding expectations and reinforcing Ternary Group’s capacity for complex environmental and remediation works.
